Friends raising one-liter steins inside an Oktoberfest beer hall

The night you came for · Monday, Sep 20

Why there is nothing like the Oktoberfest

It began in 1810 as the wedding party of Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig, and Munich has celebrated on the same meadow ever since. Six to seven million people come every year. Nothing in America quite prepares you for it.

The tents

Not tents at all, but wooden halls for thousands, each run by a Munich brewery and each with its own character, from rowdy to refined.

The Maß

Beer brewed only inside Munich's city limits, served in one-liter glass steins carried a dozen at a time by waitresses in Dirndl.

The music

A brass band on a center stage plays all evening. Every few songs comes "Ein Prosit", and a whole hall of strangers raises its glasses together.

The food

Spit-roasted chicken, giant pretzels, pork knuckle and Obatzda cheese spread, eaten at long wooden tables that are made for standing on.

The Tracht

Most guests wear Lederhosen and Dirndl, and so should you. Our tip: shop for yours in Garmisch at the start of the trip, where the locals buy theirs.

Your table

On a Monday evening with a reserved table you skip the queues entirely. No reservation means no seat, so yours is a true privilege.
